Howalt+McDowell Insurance began in 1946 as a venture of a loan and real estate operation owned by William D. Howalt and Pierce McDowell. In 1957, Lester Scherschligt joined the firm to develop its insurance department. Six years later, the insurance operation became a separate corporation known as Howalt-McDowell Insurance, Inc. Les Scherschligt and two partners purchased the insurance operation in 1968 and led the company to prominence and steady growth. Almost 20 years later, in 1986, Les’s son Jeff assumed the helm as President of Howalt+McDowell and grew the agency to a staff of 28.
Today, Howalt+McDowell employs a staff of over 85 of some of the finest thinkers and decision-makers in our region. More important, we’ve helped the most respected businesses of the Northern Plains manage risk, grow and prosper. And that’s given our people the thrill of helping others achieve their full potential.
